Do spaces and emoji count as characters?

Yes. Spaces, line breaks and punctuation all count. X weights some characters, including emoji and many non-Latin scripts, as two, so a post with several emoji reaches 280 sooner. Styled Unicode fonts can also count as more than one character on some networks.

How much of a caption do people actually see?

Only the first line or two before "more" on Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn. The full limit is room for detail, not a target. Put the hook and the keyword people would search for in the first sentence.

Do the limits change?

They do. TikTok raised its caption limit in 2024 and X lets Premium subscribers post much longer posts. Check the help centers linked below if a field rejects text that fits this table.
