How the Instagram algorithm works
Updated October 6, 2026. Figures from the official sources listed below.
Instagram has no single algorithm. Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore each rank content with their own models, based on your past activity, the post itself, the account that posted it and your history with that account. For reaching new people, Instagram says watch time, likes and sends matter most.
Is there one Instagram algorithm?
No. Instagram has explained that each part of the app uses its own ranking, because people use each part differently. Feed and Stories lean on accounts you already follow. Reels and Explore are mostly about content from accounts you do not follow yet.
What signals does Instagram use?
| Signal | What it means |
|---|---|
| Your activity | What you like, share, save and comment on, and what you skip |
| Information about the post | How popular it is, how quickly people interact, when and where it was posted, its length if it is a video |
| Information about the poster | How often people interacted with that account recently |
| Your history with the poster | Whether you comment on each other's posts, follow each other, message each other |
What matters most for reaching new people?
Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, has said that for reach to people who do not follow you, the strongest signals are how long people watch, how many like the post and how many send it to someone else. For reach to your existing followers, likes and watch time matter, along with comments.
Does Instagram favor original content?
Yes. Instagram has said it reduces the reach of reposted content from other creators and of videos with another app's watermark, and gives more distribution to the original creator.
What can you actually do?
- Make the first seconds of a Reel clear about what the video is, so people keep watching.
- Post things people want to send to a friend or save for later, like tips, lists and templates.
- Reply to comments and messages, since interaction history shapes what your followers see.
- Use trial Reels to test ideas with non-followers before showing them to your followers.
- Avoid watermarks from other apps and reposting others' content as your own.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Instagram algorithm punish buying followers?
Instagram ranks posts by how people interact with them. Followers who never interact do not help ranking, which is why pairing any follower growth with real posting and some likes or views on recent posts keeps the numbers in proportion.
What is a trial Reel?
A Reel shown first only to people who do not follow you. If it performs well you can share it with your followers too.
Do hashtags still affect the algorithm?
They help Instagram understand what a post is about, but watch time, likes and sends weigh much more in recommendations.
